I grew up in south Boston but never felt like I was in the ghetto.  Back in 2005 I had to inspect a product from one of our suppliers in Watts and when I talked to the owner on the phone before flying out I told him I’d just get a rental at the airport and drive there.  He insisted on picking me up at the airport and I thought it was just good customer service, until I got there.  It was a very sobering experience and I was thankful for leaving before dark.
